Bioda Buidhe
TROTTERNISH, PORTREE AND THE BRAES
| ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
1. Park at the summit of the minor road linking Staffin and Uig. It is a busy spot but most walkers will be heading for the Quiraing to the north; this walk starts on the south side of the road, to the right as you look down on Staffin. There is a good path for the first kilometre up the edge of the grassy escarpment. The views over the Quiraing behind and the land-slipped mass of Cleat and its lochs directly below are fabulous. (The picture shows Bioda Buidhe and Cleat seen from the Quiraing).
2. From the first grassy summit, it is worth continuing to Bioda Buidhe which has even better views. Descend the short steep slope to the west and, keeping close to the escarpment, cross the short flat area. A sheep path then ascends the steep slope directly ahead by taking a sloping route heading diagonally to the right. Once atop the slope, turn left and follow the ridge up to the summit of Bioda Buidhe.
3. Bioda Buidhe has the same views north and east as the lower summit, but has the added advantage of panoramic views south along the Trotternish Ridge towards the Storr, and northwest to the outer islands. It is worth walking along the length of the flat summit escarpment before returning by the route of ascent.
